What
Is TruForm Handicapping Worksheet?
TruForm
Handicapping Worksheet
The
TruForm
Worksheet is
a handicapping tool that can take the place of, or be used in conjunction
with, the Past Performances and other handicapping tools. The purpose of the
TruForm
Worksheet is to :
- Focus on what we feel are
the important factors of Handicapping.
- Consistency By bring these
factors into focus, your handicapping becomes more consistent
- Save Time The TruForm
Worksheet is designed to save time by bringing the important factors into
focus and eliminating all the "extra" information. The whole race
is on one 81/2 by 11 inch printed sheet. This allows the handicapper to process
a race quickly and see patterns. This is especially important for Desktop
Racing, Simulcasting, and RaceBooks where there are betting opportunities
every few minutes from multiple tracks.
At this point, the reader should
go to TruForm
Handicapping Worksheets
and print out a Worksheet for a race and follow along with the explanation section
below. The section below describes each field and its significance in our Handicapping
process.

to Fields on the TruForm
Handicapping Worksheet
Standard
information this section
describes the "standard information" on the TruForm
Worksheet, which is included in most handicapping
products. Experienced handicappers may want to skip this section.
HDM
information this section describes the
information unique on the TruForm
Worksheet. This information
is calculated using EIS Company developed formulas and can
only be found on the TruForm
Worksheet.
-
Predicted Speed and
Speed Rank
- The Predicted
Speed is a figure developed by
EIS based on the BRISnet Speed
rating. Speed
Rank is a ranking of the Entries by the Predicted
Speed figure. We consider the Predicted
Speed figure as the most important handicapping factor. That
is why the Entries are listed on the Worksheet in order of Speed
Rank.
-
Predicted Pace and
Pace Rank - The
Predicted Pace is
a figure developed by EIS
based on the BRISnet E2 pace rating. This is a rating of the Entries speed
to the half way point of the race. Pace
Rank is a ranking of the Entries by the Predicted
Pace figure. We consider the Predicted
Pace figure as a very important handicapping factor.
- S/P FIG - The
Speed/Pace figure
is a combination of Predicted
Speed and Predicted
Pace. This
figure gives a good indication of the Entries overall expected performance
level.
- Days Off - This
number represents the days since the Entries last race. We prefer 11 to 28
days as the optimum days off. Entries with up to 48 days off are considered
playable. Entries off for more than 48 days are considered a
"lay off" entry and are discriminated against.
-
J/T FIG - The
Jockey/Trainer figure
is a rating of the Jockey/Trainer combination at the current Meet.
-
Work Fig and Work Rank - The
Workout Figure is based on a table of Workout figures for the various workout
distances. The Work Fig based on where, when, distance, type of work
(Breezing or Handily), and track condition. The Work Fig can be an
important factor in determining the Entries condition. It is especially
useful for Entries coming off a layoff and for maidens/1st Time Starters.
The Work Rank is
the Entries rank based on Workout Figs.
- Med - This
column is used to identify an Entry who is a first time Lasix user as denoted
by "1stL" in the Med
column. 1stL entries can have a significance in hot, humid whether
and very cold weather and can move a First Time Starter (FTL) up in preference.
- S/P Win% - This
column is on the NYRA Circuit Worksheets only. It is a database statistic
updated weekly. This column is the Win% of entries that have this HDM Speed
Rank and Pace Rank for the course and distance of this race. For example,
if an entry has a HDM Speed Rank of 1 and HDM Pace Rank of 4 and a S/P
Win% of 26.7 in a today's Dirt Route Race; It mean that horses
with a HDM Speed Rank of 1 and HDM Pace Rank of 4 win 26.7% of Dirt
Routes at this Track/Meet. This statistic is done for Dirt Sprint, Dirt Route,
Turf Main Course, and Turf Inner Course.
- HDM Pick for
NYRA Race Tracks-
The HDM
Pick, shown in red on the TruForm
Worksheet, are the computer generated
selections based on the handicapping factors on the TruForm
Worksheet as described above. For
NYRA Racing, the HDM
Pick is based
on the HDM Database tables of Win Percents of various factors over the last
3 years. These tables are updated weekly. The formula NYRA Tracks is analyzed
before each Meet to try to optimize the Win% of the top 2 picks.
- HDM Pick for
All Other Race Tracks-
The HDM
Pick, shown in red on the TruForm
Worksheet, are the computer generated
selections based on the handicapping factors on the TruForm
Worksheet as described above.
For all Race Tracks other than NYRA Track (see above), the HDM
Pick is based on a standard formula that weights each handicapping
factor. The TruForm
Worksheets themselves are applicable
to all North American Thoroughbred Race Tracks. We will post the TruForm
Worksheets for other Tracks and special
events. Typically we post 3 to 6 Tracks daily.

- Updates
to the TruForm
Handicapping Worksheet <<<<<<<<<
- HDM Turf Figures
- We developed a new
set of figures exclusively for Turf Races. The
HDM
Turf Figures are only
listed for Turf Races and are in green.
They are listed on the third line
and in the column below the respective HDM figure on the first line.
If an entry doesn't have a turf
start in its last 3 starts, or if the starts are at foreign tracks where no
BRIS speed figures are not available, then the entry gets no
HDM Turf Figures
- Predicted
Turf Speed &
Rank - This figure is a prediction of the
entries overall speed in this turf race. It is similar to the HDM Prodicted
Speed on the first line, but in its calculation it only uses the most
recent turf races the entry
has in its past performance. The rank number rates each entry from highest
to lowest figure. If an entry doesn't have a turf start in its last 3
starts, or if the starts are at foreign tracks where no BRIS speed figures
are not available, then the entry gets no HDM
Turf Figures
- Predicted
Turf Pace &
Rank
- This
figure is a prediction of the entries overall Late
Pace in this turf race. It is similar to the HDM Prodicted
Pace on the first line, but in its calculation it only uses the most recent
turf races the entry has in its past
performance. The calculation is also different because it is based on
the LP (Late Pace) Brisnet Figure. The theory is that in Turf Races,
Late Pace ability dominates the race. Turf Races typically has a different
pace scenario where many horses win off a late move. Many turf races are
run with a "cavalry charge" in the stretch. The Predicted
Turf Pace is an indication
of the entries ability to finish with a good late move. The rank number
rates each entry from highest to lowest figure. If an entry doesn't have
a turf start in its last 3 starts, or if the starts are at foreign tracks
where no BRIS speed figures are not available, then the entry gets no
HDM Turf
Figures.
-
Turf S/P
- This
figure is combination of the Predicted
Turf Speed and Predicted
Turf Pace similar
to the S/P Figure on the first line. This
figure gives a good indication of the Entries overall expected performance
level. If
an entry doesn't have a turf start in its last 3 starts, or if the starts
are at foreign tracks where no BRIS speed figures are not available, then
the entry gets no HDM
Turf Figures.
- Last
Race Turf Mark - Next to the Last
Finish position
on the first line will be a "
t " which
indicates that the last race it ran was on turf. This is
true for Worksheets where the race is carded on the dirt as well as the
turf. Many handicappers like to know if there is a Turf to Dirt or a Dirt
to Turf angle.

The HDM Turn Time Report
The
HDM Turn Time Report (TT Report) ranks the entries in
the race in terms of early, middle, and late pace. The last 5 races of the entries
past performance lines are examined for the Pace
Line Race. The Pace
Line Race
is seleted based on the surface/distance of today's race.
At this point, the reader should
go to
HDM Turn Time Reports
and print out a TT Report for a race and follow along with the explanation section
below:
There are 3 types of figures / ranks
on the TT Report. The ranks are in parenthesis next to the respective figure:
- BRIS Figures &
Ranks: These are the
raw BRIS figures for the Pace
Line Race.
Click the following link for an explanation of the BRIS figures: (www.brisnet.com).
- E1 - The E1 Pace Figure
rates how fast the horse ran from the Start to First call for the Pace
Line Race
- E2 - The E2 Pace Figure
rates how fast the horse ran from the Start to Second call for the Pace
Line Race
- LP - The LP Pace Figure
rates how fast the horse ran from the Second call to the Finish for the
Pace
Line Race
- SPD - The SPD Figure
rates how fast the horse ran from the Start to the Finish
for the Pace
Line Race
- HDM Turn Time Figures &
Ranks:
These figures/ranks are created
by the HDM program based on the raw BRIS figures for the Pace
Line Race.
- TT - The TT Figure
is E2 - E1 for the Pace
Line Race.
This figure
is intended to rate the the horses speed around the far turn.
- E2+TT - The E2+TT Figure
is E2 Figure plus the TT Figure for the Pace
Line Race.
This figure
is intended to rate the horses speed around the far turn and the quality
of the "middle move".
- Velocity- The Velocity
Figure is the average of the E1, E2, LP Figures for the Pace
Line Race.
This figure
is intended to rate the horses overall velocity during the Pace
Line Race.
A high velocity rating indecates that the horse should be a strong Pace
contender.
- HDM Speed Figures & Ranks:
These
are the same figures created by the HDM program for the TruForm
Worksheet.
These figures are based on the last five races for the respective entry.
- HDM Spd - Predicted
Speed for today's race. Note: Entries are listed
by by HDM Spd Rank.
- HDM S/P - Predicted
Speed/Pace for today's race
Pace
Line Race: The
Pace Line Race is a race selected from the last 5 starts that is the
most recent at today's surface/distance on a Fast/Firm track as follows:
- Turf - If today's race
is on the Turf, the Pace
Line Race is the most recent Turf race on
a Firm Course. Distance on Turf is not considered.
- Dirt Sprint - If today's
race is a Dirt Sprint (i.e. 1-Turn Race), the Pace
Line Race is the most recent Dirt Sprint (i.e.
1-Turn Race) on a Fast Track
- Dirt Route - If today's
race is a Dirt Route (i.e. 2-Turn Race), the Pace
Line Race is the most recent Dirt Route (i.e.
2-Turn Race) on a Fast Track
NOTE:
If there is no race in the entries last 5 starts that meets the criteria above,
then there is NO Pace
Line Race for this entry. Only HDM Speed and
Pace Figures will be generated for this entry. You will see "99" in
the rank for the Entries with no Pace
Line Race.
